After calibration, the Cinema modeвЂ™s accuracy was the best weвЂ™ve measured on a TV (more on this below). While Filmmaker Mode was the C1вЂ™s most technically accurate mode on its default settings, we often preferred the brighter Cinema mode for HDR video playback because it preserved more highlight details, though its image wasnвЂ™t quite as accurate before calibration. We measured over 750 nits of brightness on our 65-inch review sample in the Cinema mode and 600 nits in Filmmaker Mode, both of which are more than enough to make HDR highlights pop on screen. Overall, the C1 produced a wonderful picture, showing bright, detailed images with true-to-life color that looked fantastic. In our tests, we evaluated the picture quality of the C1вЂ™s Filmmaker Mode, its ISF Expert picture mode for SDR video, and its Cinema picture mode for HDR video. The G1 comes in 55-, 65-, and 77-inch sizes. The gallery design mounts flat on the wall (and includes only a wall mount feet are a $100 option), and the TV has an ATSC 3.0 tuner to support the updated HDTV broadcast standard. Meanwhile, the G1 features LGвЂ™s new вЂњOLED evoвЂќ panel, which has a new green layer and an updated blue layer so it can be more efficient and theoretically brighter. The C1, in contrast, offers a 120 Hz refresh rate, four HDMI 2.1 inputs, and the companyвЂ™s newest SoC, and it comes in 48-, 55-, 65-, and 77-inch versions, as well as a new 83-inch size. It also has fewer HDMI inputs, and those it does offer are only HDMI 2.0 instead of 2.1 in addition, it uses a less powerful SoC ( system on a chip, consisting of a CPU, a GPU, and a networking card built into one chip), so it has less powerful video processing to improve the image. The A1 is a new entry-level model that has only a 60 Hz panel (instead of 120 Hz), so films will show motion judder.

Unlike in prior years, where differences between most of the LG models were cosmetic- and features-based, in 2021 LGвЂ™s models differ significantly in performance. The company also has the 8K ZX and the rollable RX, but those two models cost as much as a nice car, so we didnвЂ™t consider them. LGвЂ™s 2021 OLED TV line consists of (from lowest to highest price) the A1, C1, and G1 series. LG and Sony typically introduce new OLED TV lines every year.

But the Sony A90J is significantly more expensive than the LG C1, and the step up in performance may not justify the price increase for anyone but the most ardent videophile.

Sony has also updated the user interface to the new Google TV platform (our favorite streaming media platform), in place of Android TV. The A90J is available in three screen sizes (55, 65, and 83 inches) and has two full-bandwidth HDMI 2.1 ports for use with the newest video game systems. This extra brightness also allows the A90J to display more highlight details than other OLEDs can show, so clouds, mountains, and other bright picture elements in HDR video look more realistic. As a result, the A90J produces brighter highlights than any other OLED TV weвЂ™ve tested, so images really pop off the screen. Sony added an aluminum sheet to the OLED panel to dissipate heat more effectively, a design change that allowed the company to increase the panelвЂ™s brightness.

The Sony Bravia XR Master Series A90J offers the best image weвЂ™ve seen from an OLED TV, or any other TV, to date. More expensive OLED models from LG and Sony offer improvements in image brightness and video processing, but those improvements may not be worth the price increase for most people. In addition to being brighter than last yearвЂ™s CX (our former top pick), the C1 has a new Game Optimizer mode, which groups all the gaming controls and updated features together to improve the gaming experience. The C1 is available in screen sizes from 48 to 83 inches and has an extremely thin and attractive design, and the TVвЂ™s Filmmaker Mode makes it easy for anyone to get a highly accurate image. It supports the leading high dynamic range standards, so you get the best picture possible from HDR sources, and it has all the HDMI 2.1 features you need for improved sound quality and game play. The LG C1 4K OLED TV offers superb image quality with both HD and 4K sources, including video games.
